Mozilla Firefox 1.0.3 and Mozilla 1.7.7 Coming. Tuesday April 5th, 2005

New maintenance updates for Mozilla Firefox and the Mozilla Application Suite are on the way. Mozilla Firefox 1.0.3 and Mozilla 1.7.7 will include critical security and stability fixes but no new features. Windows Firefox users will be relieved to hear that Firefox 1.0.3 will fix the bug that causes multiple Firefox entries to appear in the Add or Remove Programs window.

The first release candidates of Firefox 1.0.3 were circulated on Saturday, with a second set of 1.0.3 release candidates made available on Sunday. Some more 1.0.3 release candidates were uploaded a few hours ago and these are likely to become the final 1.0.3 builds if no further problems are found. On Saturday, test builds of Mozilla 1.7.7 were also released.

One particularly nasty security bug fixed by Firefox 1.0.3 and Mozilla 1.7.7 is bug 288688, which allows a malicious site to use JavaScript to grab random parts of the memory heap. Secunia has a security advisory on the JavaScript memory heap disclosure bug and a test case that reveals random parts of the memory heap (note that this demonstration caused some application crashes in our tests).

Due to the severity of the JavaScript memory heap disclosure bug, it is likely that an update to Camino (version 0.8.4) will also be released.
Linux: OpenSuSe / WIN2k. Mozilla Guerilla: SeaMonkey + Multizilla - Adblock - Flashblock.
